The Pond: Needle Felted Caricature Dolls

Big Pond, Li’l Pond
Earlier this year I was contacted by UK folk singer, Kathryn Williams, about making dolls for the CD cover of her latest project called The Pond – a collaboration with Simon Edwards and Ginny Clee. I’ve always wanted to see my dolls on a CD and this project was really fun.

Working on a project like this is really a lot of fun. Making caricature dolls of real people can be hilarious, especially with such a fun-loving group as these three talented musicians. As I progressed through the project, I sent photos of their little doppelgangers coming to life. They wondered if I could hear the shrieks of laughter coming from across the pond.
The biggest design decision we came up against was whether or not to make the dolls get dressed. When they saw photos of their little naked selves it was a tough call. But they decided to be a little more conservative for their album cover and button up.
They Finally Meet!
It is exhilarating and exhausting when I finally get a custom project completed and sent away. The anticipation of waiting to hear from the recipients is pretty intense. But when photos like these arrive of my little caricature dolls with their larger, less wooly counterparts, it all turns to pure joy!
